Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a condition which falls under the umbrella term ‘neurodiversity’ and refers to differences in parts of the brain responsible for the executive functions (e.g. goal-related behaviour, organising, planning, carrying out tasks, working memory). Difficulties in these areas can manifest as frequent forgetfulness, lateness, difficulty focusing or concentrating, high distractibility, poor motivation, difficulty completing and prioritising tasks, poor organisational skills and sometimes difficulties managing and regulating emotions. As well as these challenges, people with ADHD also experience many positives such as the ability to think quickly, rapidly switch attention and thought process in response to changing stimuli, high energy levels, many deep interests and are curious, engaging, often talkative and exciting people to be around. They are also known for having excellent problem-solving skills, creativity and an ability to ‘think outside the box.’

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) describes ADHD without the hyperactivity component and is often missed due to not standing out in the same way as more hyperactive behaviours might. This may appear more ‘day dreamy’ or distracted without obvious high energy, ‘motor-driven’ behaviours.

Support for ADHD and ADD includes explorative therapy to understand more about how challenges related to these diagnoses present in day to day life and how they may explain difficulties encountered, both currently, and in the past such as low confidence, anxiety or low self-esteem. ADHD coaching supports individuals by helping to identify specific challenges and teaching skills, techniques and strategies to overcome them, learning to maximise potential and harness the positive aspects of the condition.

Dr Susie Rudge offers both therapy and coaching for ADHD. Please see here for information on both approaches.

Susie also offers a full assessment and diagnostic service of ADHD and ADD. Please follow this link for more information.
